Green Smoothies for Keeping Skin Young

Today I am sharing my wonderful Anytime Green Smoothie recipe
to help keep your body young.  There is debate about juicing or blending, but I believe its best to keep fiber in my smoothies.  There are special conditions where it is better for the body to use juices, but for regular health the fiber is very beneficial. There are pros and cons regarding fiber.  Yes.  It can be considered an anti-nutrient because it binds some minerals.  BUT, on the other hand, it provides fermentable material for good bacteria in the colon. The fermentation process forms short chain fatty acids which helps in cancer prevention. Fiber in the colon helps keep blood sugar stable by slowing down the absorption of sugars into the blood stream – this is important for lots of reasons, including maintaining youthful skin. Fiber also pulls cholesterol from the body and it helps to eliminate toxins from the body by providing the mass to keep waste products moving through the system. I encourage you to add it to your daily diet.  You really do need a high speed blender for this – something like vitamix or blend tech.  I have a blendtec.  It’s the handiest kitchen tool I have.  It makes sensational smooth dips such as hummus, but I use it every day for smoothies of various kinds.

If you want youthful looking skin, you’ve got to get healthy right down to the cellular level.  Shining strong hair, flawless skin, strong nails – all of these are a sign of good health.  We call it ‘beauty’ but in reality – its healthy.  If you want to look ‘beautiful’ concentrate on ‘healthfulness’ and you’ll get the beauty.   There’s something innately beautiful about youth- its strong, clean, vibrant.

Every day I take my green smoothie to work and it freaks my colleagues out. Seeing a tall green drink is just much too weird for most of the people I work with, but a couple of brave souls have tried it.

Personally I think it looks awesome.  Its brimming with chlorophyll, bright green, fresh and totally loaded with phytochemicals.  Tony (my husband) and I have this every day so if we don’t sit down to a meal  of vegies, I don’t mind too much because we have had plenty already.  It’s sweet, it makes an awesome ‘on the go’ lunch, and I know its doing my body a world of good.  Here is my favourite version of our ‘Anytime Green Smoothie’.   Experiment to find out what works best for you.   Just use lots of leafy greens and some fruit to sweeten.  Tip:  red and green make murky brown…..

Another tip:   Don’t add papaya and the seeds!!!  The seeds are hot hot hot.  Hot as mustard.   I thought we had accidentally included a green chile pepper.   Payapya seeds are used to get rid of internal parasites in traditional medicine.  They aren’t horrible, just hot, and in my opinion have no place in my Anytime Smoothie.

And One More Tip:  If you let your smoothie sit – for example if you pack it up and take it to work with you, it will thicken up.  If that happens then give the well sealed container a good shake.  Sometimes I add some water to thin it out a bit.

As said above you really need a high speed blender such as vitamix, or blendtec for this:

Anytime Green Smoothie:
Wash all vegetables and fruit.  Use Organic where-ever possible:

1/3rd bunch of Kale
1/3rd of a romaine lettuce
3-4 stalks of celery
1/3rd bunch of parsley                                                                                 
1 apple (quartered)
½ mango (peeled
½ cup of water (apple juice if you really need it)
Place chopped apple, celery, water, parsley and blend till liquefied
Add broken up Kale: blend a bit more
Add lettuce: blend till completely smooth
Add some ice cubes if desired.

Here’s whats in it that replenishes your cells and keeps you healthy right to the DNA level:

Lutein: helps your skin stay hydrated, elastic and prevents oxidation.
Lutein and Zeaxanthin prevent macular degeneration and cateracts.
Chlorophyll helps prevent cancers and is the subject of quite a bit of study for this topic.
Vitamin K is essential to healthy strong bones, and is involved in regulation of blood sugar.
Vitamin E is fat soluble antioxidant helps prevent oxidation of brain cell membranes.
Vitamin C is a water soluble antioxidant.
It Helps build collagen, immunity, prevent gout, possibly cancers
Vitamin A as beta Carotene:  Protects against macular degeneration
Its needed for immunity and used in DNA replication
Calcium: needed for bone health also needed for many biological functions in the body to keep it running smoothly.

I am a big believer in preventative medicine.  My work brings me into contact with people who have metastasized cancers, amputations from out of control blood sugars, diverticulitis, pancreatitis, colon resections, liver problems…I could go on.  Many of these illnesses are lifestyle illnesses. Some of these people are much much too young.  Genetics plays a major role, but its lifestyle that can help prevent, and even heal some of these conditions.

    I wonder if you can help me. My mother has suffered all her life from kidney stones – the oxalate version – and has pancreatits at the moment after a blocked gall duct by another stone there. I would love to give her green smoothies as they are great for me and my family, however I do not want her to get more stones. What would you recommend???? Is there anything green that is safe to take? Ulli

      Hi Ulli: I would recommend staying away from high oxalate foods. Low oxalate foods that you might try in a smoothie would include iceberg or romaine Lettuce, apple without the skin, cabbage, use a bit of water to get it going. And don’t over do the amount perhaps just a couple of times per week. Its really important for people who have kidney stones to drink LOTS of water – 2 liters or more per day – if you have kidney stones you need to make about 1.5 to 2 liters of urine per day. Drinking water before and after consuming food can help to eliminate oxalate from the system. Just FYI there is some research that indicates that essential fatty acids can help reduce the incidence of kidney stones. The amount in the study was for 30 days and 900 mg eicosapentaenoic acid and 600 mg docosahexaenoic acid was taken daily. These essential fatty acids are found in fish oil- you might try looking for a fish oil supplement that provides these amounts. If you are into reading studies, I’ve included the reference below. Its always wise to consult your primary health carer if you are going to do anything different with your diet and have a medical condition. Essential Fatty Acids are also blood thinners – so that might be something the Doctor needs to be aware of if your Mother decides to include EFAs. All the best – let me know how it goes.

      Green smoothies would not get rid of gallstones, although the fiber would help to reduce cholesterol.
      I would need to know more about you to answer your question more fully, but generally following a low fat diet and losing weight if you need to are advised to help prevent gallstones.

      There is a technique in alternative medicine called Gallbladder Flush which might help. There are several different techniques which can be used. Why don’t you take a look at this site. I would recommend being under the guidance of a qualified health practitioner to do this.

      Drinking coffee might help too. The natural standards data base reports that caffeine is possibly effective in reducing symptoms of gallbladder disease. 4 cups of coffee per day (800mg) has the best results.

      Vitamin C is also listed as possibly effective for women, but not men. Another source reports that the amount is between 500mg and 2,000mg per day.
